Gutenberg and Sections

I'm having trouble with Sections and Gutenberg. A page created with sections enabled (pre-Gutenberg) doesn't seem to permit the additions of blocks. I'm about to tear out sections completely. What is the word on the level of Sections and Gutenberg compatibility? When I search the support forum I find conflicting information:
From: https://generatepress.com/gp-premium-1-7/
- Sections: Allow Sections when Gutenberg is activated
- Sections: Hide Gutenberg editor when Sections enabled
From post of: August 17, 2018 at 6:24 pm #652316
- "That’s not possible – Gutenberg itself can’t be included within each Section."
From post of: October 20, 2018 at 10:02 am #705975
- "Gutenberg and Sections are compatible now"

Hi there,
Gutenberg editor cannot be used inside Sections as for now.
So you either choose Sections or Gutenberg but not both.
We are actively working on Sections block :)
Let me know if this answers your question.
I can't seem to get Gutenberg to work outside of existing Sections. Is it supposed to?
No. If you activated Sections for a specific page then Gutenberg won't work.
If you use Gutenberg for a specific page then Sections won't work.
Thanks for the updated clarification.
No problem!
Sections block will make all of this possible so stay tuned :)
@Leo: Any idea when those sectionblocks are available?
Thanks, Henk
Hi there,
during our development we discovered an Issue in Gutenberg core that could lead to lock-in of users content, this happens with all 3rd party 'container/section' blocks.
We have raised the issue with Gutenberg Developers whilst we also work on a solution. If we're successful we would like it to be in GPP 1.8 but at this time we cannot say for certain. We don't like the idea users could lose content :)
Maybe I missed something. But can't you simply use a Gutenberg Column Block with a width of "1" to achieve the exact same thing? Presto, a section???
Thats what i am doing and it works really good other than the fact that in the editor it only fills half the screen for some reason, but it works fine on the front end.
Cheers,
Simon
My question is do Sections have a purpose now that WP has blocks? I'm asking this as someone who hasn't studied either to a significant degree which on the surface may seem lazy. But I can tell you I'm getting very tired of learning things that are obsolete before I can even master them. I'm also a bit frustrated with my experience with GP in general which has been that I don't find out important things until I've wasted half a day trying different solutions because I'm convinced that as an amateur certainly it is me doing something wrong.
An example of course is this question of Sections working or not working with Gutenberg. GP promotes their Sections as a mini page editor and they don't state anywhere that oh btw it doesn't work with the current edition of WP - until you try and try and then finally dig into the help forums to get an answer. Another example: Lightweight Grid Columns. Again, here I was wasting half a day trying to figure out why the button isn't showing in the editor. Finally I went to the help forum and it turns out it's been a known issue for months and that there's a patch you can request to fix it.
Now you might say that maybe I should be going to the help forums in the first place. I am. I'm following their tutorials. The tutorials that don't mention anywhere oh btw this that we are teaching you doesn't work.
I think we have a pattern here where GP could and should be communicating to purchasers of their product which of their components don't work and which do. Which of the things they have advertised to get us to buy that in reality don't work. Rather than wasting the time of a lot of people that have paid them money.
Thanks Simon, yes a Column block does the trick, the GP Section block will however bring all the current Section settings into the block editor, which will be great for those who don't want to be throwing CSS around.
Jeff, WordPress 5.0 brought around a lot of changes that unfortunately impacted the GP Sections quite severely. Something that we have been rectifying with the recent updates. Going forward, for those who choose NOT to use the Block Editor will still find a place for Sections. But i am sorry to hear of your frustrations, we do appreciate our users insights as we're always looking for ways to improve.
Had come across this forum post ever since had been facing the similar issue of Gutenberg not working where sections is being used or vice versa.
Wondering if GPP 1.8 will arrive soon which should hopefully address the specific conflicting issue
For now, in pursuit of exploring more options- Have started using coblocks to circumvent around the relative issue and proceed further with building the site which appears to be quite robust and feature-rich in terms of enhancing the column limitations with Gutenberg. The same get extended very well with sections-rows-columns block in coblocks :)
1.8 has already released (current version is 1.8.3).
Unfortunately Sections add-on didn't make it in.
We want to make sure we absolutely do this right and there won't be any backward compatibility issue.
David mentioned this plugin the other that might be worth trying:

Hope this helps!
In the meantime, this is available...

I still find Gutenberg VERY clumsy, and even with this add-on, to do typical boxed content within full width section you have to:
- set page layout to full width
- do everything in section blocks unless you just want the blocks to spread full width
- add a boxed section block within the outer section
- add a column block within inner section
- add content blocks to colums
Thanks Paul.
Our upcoming blocks module called should be much better than that.
Stay tuned :)
