If you select Site Footer in the type then the default footer should be removed and replaced with the element.

Is that not working for you?

    Yes, not working.

    I did it as:

    Appearance — Customize — Layout — Footer — Footer Widget = 0

    And now footer is removed.

If you select Site Footer for Block Type then the element should replace the entire footer including the footer widgets.

    Hi there
I’m also having a problem with this. The footer block is just adding on to the bottom of the footer and forcing the existing footer up above it rather than replacing it.

    Hi again
When I create a layout and disable the footer on the page I want to display the footer block, it replaces the footer with the new footer block I’ve created. If I don’t disable the footer (using disable elements) then it just puts the new block into the existing footer. I am using the footer element not a hook in the footer. Don’t think that is supposed to happen?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there,

the Footer option in the Block Element refers to the Footer Bar ( where the copyright is – perhaps we should make that clearer ๐Ÿ™‚ ) not the Footer Widget Area.

If you’re rebuilding the entire footer and want the widgets gone then you should set them to 0 in Customizer > Layout > Footer.

Aha. Yes that makes sense now. Probably could be clearer in the documentation to be honest – maybe I missed it. Thanks for coming back to me. ๐Ÿ™

I think we can add a little notice to that option to make it clearer.
    Glad to be of help.
