Hi Tom,
I’m using the base WP Show Posts to produce a listing of posts at a glance. https://arlinstitute.org/news-home
Some of those posts have images on them, when you view the actual post itself. I’d like scaled down versions of those images to show on the summary page.
I’ve check the box for images and set the width & height, but nothing shows on the page.
Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,
SteigDecember 28, 2016 at 11:23 pm #258687TomLead DeveloperLead DeveloperAre the featured images for those posts set?: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/adding-featured-images/
December 28, 2016 at 11:33 pm #258695SteigOk, that is what I’m doing wrong. But I didn’t set the images as featured because it pushes the sidebar down.
I wanted the sidebars to remain the same and the picture to show in just the main body of the post.
Is it possible to restrict the size of a featured image?
December 28, 2016 at 11:36 pm #258696TomLead DeveloperLead DeveloperYou can hide or move the single post page header in Customize > Layout > Page Header.
The size of the single post featured image can be changed in the Page Header meta box of the specific page. There’s no global sizing for that yet: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/page-header-image/
December 29, 2016 at 4:03 pm #258978SteigI’ve redone a couple of posts so the images are headers and restricted size. Does WP Show Posts work ok if some have header images and some don’t?
I’m still not getting them to show. I’ve checked the box to show images and only am setting the width (assuming the height will auto size for aspect ratio).
But no images are showing. https://arlinstitute.org/news-home
unrelated, do you know of a simple means of putting social share icons on a single page? It seems plugins focus on getting them onto all pages/posts. I’m doing that for all posts, but would like to put them on a single page and that seems to be universally unsupported.
December 30, 2016 at 12:24 am #259047TomLead DeveloperLead DeveloperHmm, strange. You’ve uploaded them using the Featured image meta box and not the Page Header meta box, correct?
You’d have to use a plugin like AddThis – they should have options to display the icons on single posts and not pages etc..
December 30, 2016 at 1:50 pm #259247SteigI think I’m sorted out. I had uploaded the image as a page header instead of featured image, not really appreciating the difference between them. Thank!

January 5, 2017 at 8:04 pm #261111SteigTom,
I just noticed that images loaded as feature images don’t show the picture caption by default. Is there a way I can make the caption show if one is present for featured images?
Thanks
January 6, 2017 at 12:12 am #261156TomLead DeveloperLead DeveloperFeatured images typically don’t show the captions in WordPress: https://developer.wordpress.org/reference/functions/the_post_thumbnail/
It’s something I might look into in the future.
January 6, 2017 at 7:29 am #261267SteigI can see why a captain wouldn’t show up when it’s actually showing as a thumbnail, like in WP Show Posts, but when looking at the post itself and the image is more prominent, then it makes sense the caption could be needed.
I guess I have to choose between having a “summary” page of posts with images showing automatically or giving photo credits.
Thanks for letting me know.
January 6, 2017 at 8:19 am #261280SteigWould it be possible, at the post level, to set the featured image and also insert the same picture through the “add media” button. then when the post is viewed at the post level, only show the picture added via the “add media” button so the caption can show up.
But when the summary of posts is showed using WP Show Posts, then it would use the featured image instead.
That would require some coding that would detect if the viewer was at the post level to suppress the featured image.
January 6, 2017 at 10:11 pm #261465TomLead DeveloperLead DeveloperYou can hide the featured image when viewing the single post.
If you’re using GP on the site, you could go to Customize > Layout > Page Header and set the single page header position to hide.
January 7, 2017 at 1:41 pm #261674SteigThat solved my problem perfectly. Thanks!
