Search icon and Hamburger icon not responding when clicked on

Hi after I followed the optimisation tips by Tom here: https://generatepress.com/fastest-wordpress-theme/
the hamburger icon (when in mobile view) and navigation search icon no longer respond when clicked on.
I am using the generatepress child theme
a hash symbol (#) appears at the end of the URL when clicked on
my website is smarttouchtyping.com
How do I fix this?

In Autoptimize, did you make sure to check the Also aggregate inline JS option?
I have checked the Also aggregate inline JS option but still, the problem persists.
Can you try disable all other non-GP plugins?
When I disable only the Async JavaScript plugin, the hamburger and search glass icons work when clicked on.
Could the problem be from the Async JavaScript plugin?
You may have to exclude jquery.js from the Async plugin, so it ignores that file.
excluded jquery.js from the Async plugin. still problem persists
Update:
Okay at the plugin section (Enable Autoptimize Support:) of Async plugin
I selected jQuery Method: Defer
and it worked.
