I am not seeing typography links at the top of the primary navigation menu or anywhere else.
On the GP page, i am seeing export information next to the deactivate button, along with Import/Export toward the bottom but don’t see an explanation of what these are for.

Do you mean the typography module in the customizer? Not sure I understand your issue here.

You may change the Typography of text in the Primary Nav or in fact, anywhere through this module.
The “Export” buttons are for when you want to export an external file of your GP settings. This article is a bit outdated but the same concept applies: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/import-export-overview/
