I’ve just started using WP Show Posts Pro, and it’s revealed a limitation in the way I’ve been creating the posts on my site (480 of ’em, since 2009). I only rarely, if ever, use Featured Images, because I want the image(s) in the text, below the title, not pushing the text content down the page. So far that’s been OK.
But now I want to show collections of articles by tags. That’s also working great (thanks for Show Posts!), except that there are no images. Here’s my first attempt at a page using the shortcode from Show Posts, which includes one post where I added a Featured Image to see what would happen. That one (as one would expect) is correctly displayed (but the post itself looks wrong now). Here’s that page:

I see that there are plug-ins that would let me have Featured Images, but hide them in the posts. That might work, but I don’t want to hand-tweak 480 posts to do it.
I’m hoping there is a checkbox somewhere in GeneratePress that I’ve failed to find: “Use first image in post as Featured Image.” Any chance? Or do you know of a plug-in that would do the trick?
Thank you so much for an awesome theme and great support. I recommend it every chance I get.
My apologies, I’m running GP Premium 1.2.63, but can’t update because I’m not using a child theme and would (as I understand it) lose my customization. Fixing all that is on my to-do list, too.
February 23, 2020 at 8:43 am #1174483LindaI think I’ve found half of a workaround: https://generatepress.com/forums/topic/how-to-hide-featured-image/ In that post David explains how to hide all featured images via Customizer > Layout > Blog > Featured Images > Posts.
So now I’m looking for a plugin that will set the first image in each post as the Featured Image, then I can use the above to hide it on the posts.
Not going that route yet, just in case there is a more elegant way already available in GeneratePress. Thanks for any info!
February 23, 2020 at 8:55 am #1174492LindaA secondary question, if I go the work-around route: If I hide the Featured Images from posts globally, are they still used as thumbnails in masonry display, for social sharing, etc.? My hope is that they will only be hidden from view on the posts themselves, and still function normally otherwise. Thank you!
February 23, 2020 at 8:57 am #1174493TomLead DeveloperLead DeveloperHi there,
This plugin is likely your best bet: https://wordpress.org/plugins/quick-featured-images/
When you remove them in the Customizer, it only removes the image HTML from the page – nothing else.
February 23, 2020 at 1:37 pm #1174670LindaThank you! Getting to work on that now. I really appreciate the help. (And love WP Show Post Pro! It’s exactly what I need for featuring popular tags on my site. Thanks!)
February 23, 2020 at 4:54 pm #1174750LindaAlmost there… I got and applied Quick Featured Images Pro, which worked as hoped. It used the first image in each post as the Featured Image, and (correctly) did not delete the image from the post. So far, so good. This looks as I’d hoped: https://grabmywrist.com/why-aikido/
Now my only challenge is hiding the Featured Image from the top of the posts themselves, globally.
This instruction, from David (https://generatepress.com/forums/topic/how-to-hide-featured-image/) “If you want to remove them from all Posts you can do this in the Customizer > Layout > Blog > Featured Images > Posts” looks encouraging, but I’m not seeing those options.
I do see Customizing > Blog > Post Image > Hide, but that only hides the image from the main blog page: https://grabmywrist.com/blog/, which is great as far as it goes. The featured image remains at the top of each post on the post page, e.g. https://grabmywrist.com/2020/02/movement-helps-children-learn/
Am I failing to see something, or have I run into a limitation of sticking with GP Premium 1.2.63 forever? I suppose I ought to update in any case, but…
Thank you for your help!
February 23, 2020 at 6:23 pm #1174777TomLead DeveloperLead DeveloperThat’s a very old version of GP Premium. You’ll want to update to 1.9.1 in order to take advantage of the new features (like disabling the featured image on single posts).
