Anne
Hello we just bought GP premium today and i’m confused about a few things:
We have a site with hundreds of articles already and a bunch of plugins already – Since you guys suggest not using the site importer once you have a populated site, I’d like to ‘recreate’ the look one one of your demo themes – in particular the “Wordsmith” demo
I designed a couple sections to site above what the main content that the demo has as well:
The problem is, I’m stuck on how this theme works. I can’t seem to find an option anywhere to import a site demo, and I can’t figure out how I would go about customizing the theme manually to look like the wordsmith demo.
Do I need to install elementor as well to make this all work properly? If so, how come elementor is not part of the install for GP? it should come bundled if its required to create a site to look like your demo sites shouldn’t it?
Basically I’m trying to make my homepage look like this:

Your help is much appreciated.September 21, 2020 at 9:04 pm #1453207Elvin
StaffCustomer SupportHi Anne,
Consider cloning your current site to a staging site so you can test GP without worrying about affecting your live site.:)
You can check these sites to get an idea on how to set up a staging site.
https://themeisle.com/blog/wordpress-staging-site/
https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-create-staging-environment-for-a-wordpress-site/It’s best practice to create a staging site when we plan to do major changes. Staging sites serve as a development environment so we could test things out.:)
Once you have a staging site copy of your current site, you can try importing WordSmith to it to see how it affects things.

No, you don’t Elementor to import WordSmith to your site. Only sites under Site Library > Page Builder > Elementor will need Elementor.

StaffCustomer SupportIf you don’t want to go with the staging site route, we can always help with replicating the layout of Wordsmith as well.
It’s a relatively simple site so shouldn’t be very difficult 🙂

Thanks for the replies.
I already have a staging site set up so I’ll try to import the wordsmith demo and see how that goes.
But just out of curiosity, how would I (or you) replicate the wordsmith layout myself? Would you use the AMP builder combined with some css?
Thanks

StaffCustomer SupportWordsmith is actually using GenerateBlocks with some custom CSS:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/generateblocks/The posts on the front page are displayed using WP Show Posts plugin:
https://en-ca.wordpress.org/plugins/wp-show-posts/That being said, that’s not necessary with the addition of the block elements module:
https://docs.generatepress.com/article/block-element-overview/You can create these two sections using a block element and G:

So the import didnt work at all. The homepage only imported the header area and left the content area completely blank. No posts, no sidebar nothing. I had to revert back and im going to try and build this out manually with your suggestions.

Small problem. When i reverted back to the original site (i actually had to create a new staging site) – I ended up with the same problem as before, where there is no “Site library” and some other modules are not visible in my options even after I registered the site in the back end.
One of the other modules not visible is the “Elements” that you recommended using for building the site.
Is this something you guys need to manually activate or something? It’s odd that its not visible for me:

StaffCustomer SupportYou are using GP Premium 1.2.94 which is very very old.
We are currently on 1.11.3 so please update first:
https://docs.generatepress.com/article/updating-gp-premium/Let me know if this helps 🙂

ok that worked. I guess ill start playing with the generateblocks as well as elements modules to try and build the homepage just like the mockup.
Thanks

Hi again,
I have a couple questions. As you know basically im trying to create these 2 sections at the moment: https://www.screencast.com/t/QNZuNZdz1
The first element i created ‘successfully’ but i chose the wrong location (like above header or something) – and when i changed it to “Generate after header” the logo was no longer visible at the top. It’s as if the settings were not reset to default when i changed locations of the first element.
Second problem im having is positioning the second element so it sits below the hero image, but above all the main content for the homepage – so that it sits above the sidebar/main content – just like the wordsmith demo. Which location should i select for that to be correct?

StaffCustomer SupportLet’s try to tackle one issue at the time.
when i changed it to “Generate after header” the logo was no longer visible at the top. It’s as if the settings were not reset to default when i changed locations of the first element.
That shouldn’t happen. Can you link me to the page in question?

Ok so the logo not being there was a glitch in the matrix. It appears that setting the hero block i created to ‘above the header’ made it delete the logo from the customize area. I re-uploaded the logo in the customize panel and it’s working properly now.
Back to the main event.
I am really struggling with re-create the areas that are meant to have blog posts. Let try this with some questions
1. https://prnt.sc/um9c0k – would you just make this into one element? or would you separate it into 2 elements (mostly in case i want to use the ‘buying guides’ block elsewhere on the site without the paragraph above)
2. How would you actually build this container: https://prnt.sc/um9e3u
You mentioned using Element blocks, but I’m not seeing any good block options for this. I basically need the container to have the title, and 3 blog posts from a specific category, matching the layout and style in the design.3. How would you actually build this container: https://prnt.sc/um9fav
This is even more complicated than the 3 grid above because it also has a sidebar.I would really appreciate a detailed explination so that hopefully I won’t be left with more quesitons!
I’m really new to using Generatepress so I apologize for being so needy. I’m from Vancouver island too, so I’m really wanting to like your theme!! So far your guys’ support has been great and I can see how this will be a powerful theme once I learn it.
Thanks for your time,

StaffCustomer SupportHi there,
Block, hook and header elements are all built for adding code/content into the theme templates.
The designs you’re trying to achieve are best dealt with within the post content. To display a list of posts on static pages / posts would require this plugin:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-show-posts/
Once you have created a list you can add it anywhere you need it using the shortcode it generates.
For option 3 – this looks more like the standard GP archive page, displaying a specific category. This is automatic and you can set Sidebars to display on a specific category using the layout element. Or globally via the Customizer > Layout > Sidebar.
September 23, 2020 at 7:15 pm #1456260Anne
For option 3 – how exactly do I achieve the GP archive page to display a specific category? Basically exactly like the blost post feed on the Wordsmith demo, only so it displays a specific category vs recent posts?
