Based on what I'm reading, the block-based widgets aspect of full-site editing is supposed to roll out with WordPress 5.8, currently slated for release on July 20.

I know I can use Elements now to replace the sidebar, but for the particular project/client I have in mind it would be best to stick to default/core WP where widgets are concerned.

Considering the work the GP team has put in over the last year, it seems like GP users will be able to take advantage of block-based widgets as soon as they're available. But I wanted to make sure I'm not misunderstanding or misreading anything about either WP or GP.

Thanks for any insight/info you can provide.

Hi there,

GP will make it work as long as WordPress makes it work.

You can actually already using block-based widgets if you used the Gutenberg plugin right now. I've tried a bit and to be honest...it's not very good.

Hopefully they will improve it in 5.8 :)

Yay. I hoped it'd be something like that. Seems like I can do just about anything with GPP + GB now, which makes regular widgets kind of…lame.

p.s. – I wouldn't use the Gutenberg plugin on anything but a sandbox site.

Me either ;)
