Steve
I’m a bit confused as to what is the ‘right’ way to configure/build a site header in GP/GB.
There seems to be at least 3 different options:
Customizer > Layout > Header
Element > Type=header > Site header tab
Element > Type=block > Element Type = Site Header
What is the relationship between these exactly – are they connected or completely separate? Which takes priority?.
Does ‘Element > Type=block > Element Type = Site Header’ replace ‘Element > Type=header > Site header tab’ now? It seems to be newer and more flexible… or are all 3 methods still relevant – if so, when should each be used?
If I want more than just a logo and main nav in the header is ‘Element > Type=block > Element Type = Site Header’ the way to do it? and if so when I place the main nav in it does it have to be converted to links or can it remain ‘dynamically linked’ to the the classic menu somehow?
thanks.

Hi Steve,
They are different from one another.
You can generally set up your Header through the Customizer or a Block Element – Site Header.
I personally just use a Block Element – Site Header if I want a totally different Header.
Other than that, I go with the customizer settings and a couple of CSS. Basically, it’s just a matter of preference.
If you opt to use a Block Element – Site Header, you can use a WP Navigation Block to add a menu dynamically.
If you have a header in mind that you can show us, we can point you to the best approach to do it.
Lastly, for reference, here’s an article you may view for some Header Examples and how to create them: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/header-examples/

Thanks – so the Customiser is the default header and is fine for a simple logo + Nav design, and Block Element – Site Header for more complex/different designs (which will override the default header) – is that right?
In what scenario then would one use Element > Type=header > Site header tab?

Yes, that’s right.
It’s more or less preferential. If you want to create a unique Header and add different Blocks, you can use a Block Element – Site Header. However, take note though that you can also use a Block Element – Hook to add Blocks in the Header. It just depends on which you find easier.
