hi,
i created a post, then format = video, then i put inside a youtube link, as a text code (not block)
when i press the menu - videoe category, i see the posts inside with very long featured image and also excerpt.
but in the blog layout i had set the excerpt to 0.
under menu - kids art, you can see other categories posts, that look as they should.
did i make a mistake?
i also have under menu - videos a video post created with elementor. there it looks as i want.
but i try to avoid using elementor much.
thanks

hi david,
if i use any of the 2 scripts (for video or for everything) i lose the featured image in both example posts, and in "normal" gp post and in elementor post.
it is like converting the video post, in a standard post so no feature image taken from the youtube video is there.
can i have .... everything? :)
thank you

So just to be clear, you want a Video Format to show the Video Placeholder as the featured image ?( Not the actual video ) followed by a standard post excerpt ?

Not sure how Elementor will handle anything we an assists with in the theme templates.

i don't use elementor for everything in my site.
just for the front page and the contact form page.
in the rest of my site i use only generatepress because it works with the default gutenberg and it is much easier for me. i just made a test, inserting a post with elementor to see how it handles the post with video format.
so when i create a post with elementor, in video format, with a youtube video inside, the blog page which is generatepress, shows the video as it should (with a feature image taken automatically from the video and the blog parameters of generatepress = no exceprt).
but when i create the same post, with the default gutenberg block, then it shows it in a bad way (long featured image, excerpt etc)

(left is elementor-right format as i want it to be), right is generatepress/gutenberg post)

when i use the code you sent me, it shows it right, keeping the blog format (no excerpt) but without feature image also.

i hope i explained it well now :)
thank you !!

hmm ok, i will make then some experiments in a clean generatepress site and i will write back :)
thank you !!

hi david !!
i did some experiments in another site i have. there i use only generatepress products. the 3 of them, in the pro versions. (gp, blocks, wpshowposts).

the same results, when i create a video post, without the php snippet, i see the video post featured image with very long with excerpt. when i use the snippet, the video post appears as it should be, but without featured image.

do you think i create the video posts in a wrong way?

my steps are: new post, i give a title, i go to the options and i use a the code editor, i paste the youtube address, then i go back to the visual editor, i see the video in place, then i choose post format: video, then i write the text and then i publish it.

note: i don't use a feature image, i expect the post to get it automatically from the youtube. i tried also with visual editor and the youtube embed block, and i tried also without text. i also tried with a random youtube video, in case i did a mistake with the video i uploaded.

you can check at the link. press the video category

thank you !!!

Hi there,

The Video format will display the full content of your post. This is required to show the HTML for the video (so the video shows).

The video you're adding isn't actually a featured image, it looks like a video within the content, which is correctly being removed in the excerpt.

What you can try doing is use the More tag: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/using-the-more-tag/

That way you don't need any PHP snippets. Set the Video post format, then add the More tag after the video in your content.

That should give you the desired layout.

Let us know :)

perfect, Tom !!! (and without the comma) ;)
note here for our fellow readers, the youtube video must be inserted with the youtube block so the featured image would appear correctly. some people in youtube videos use the text editor to insert the embed code. at least in my case, in 2 websites i made experiments, it didn't work.
thank you very much !!!!

Glad I could help! :)
