I know it’s possible for me to use an image as a tagline if I go in and edit the PHP code of the theme but I’m hopeful that there might be an easier way, whereby I can perform it through the customiser. Like an option to upload a tagline image instead of text in the “Site Identity” customisation interface.

Hmm, it would be difficult to position it correctly, and you would have to use a custom function.
Why not include your site title and tagline in the same image and upload it as a logo/header?
