Using an icon in place of featured image in a PODS custom post type

I've created a "pod" (CPT) with PODS that lists the media that reference works can be supplied in (book, CD, etc.). I'd love to associate a Font Awesone icon with the various media rather than a featured image. Any way to do that?

Where would you want the icon to display?
Pertinent question>. Turns out that that after more thought it can down to putting an icon on a pull-doxn menu next to the title, when in fact the title is sufficient without the icon.
