Hi Tom,

I have over two years development / design time invested into a prototype project. I'm looking to present to a client end of March.

Running the following:
Wordpress 4.9.16
WooCommerce 3.8.0
GP Premium 1.9.0

GeneratePress 2.4.2
Parent Theme

Issue:
There's been so much welcomed change under the hood of GeneratePress that's it's completely broken my site once I tried to update a few months ago. Overwhelmed, I just now began looking into it again.

I WANT to move to all FLEXBOX but I have a feeling that may be part of the problem. Plus I'm using some now depreciated GP Premium techniques for layout.

Question:
Can you or someone on your team login to the backend and give me your opinion as to my best strategy. Do I need to rebuild from scratch? I have rolled back updates once. I can make a second staging clone for your review / updates which may be best.

Alternatively, is not updating the GeneratePress parent theme an option? If so, should I match GP Premium to a specific version?

I'm sure this is not ideal or wise. Thoughts?

I look forward to your reply. Hope all is well.

Brad

Hi there,

When you say "completely broken", what do you mean?

The flexbox version of the theme is not available/won't work with GP Premium 1.9 (which is quite old). You need to have both GP and GPP running the latest versions.

This goes the same for most things. WordPress itself should be updated to the latest version.

Keeping old versions of WP/themes/plugins on your site will cause issues when you update one and not the other. If one thing gets updated, it's important to update everything else so it all falls in line.

Idea: For now would me cloning the site, then updating it to see the result be a good strategy, then I can circle back to GP support if need be?

Possibly it was an issue when WP hit v 5

Thoughts

Definitely. Always a good idea to check big updates/changes on a staging site, then push to live if all is good :)

Ok. Will duplicate staging to staging 2. Pull to local. Try updating Wp core first and take things from there.

Going to keep support ticket if you don’t mind. Will circle back with update mid week.
