Update count is one, but nothing to update

In the left-hand column of the Dashboard, next to the word Updates is a 1 in a circle. However, when I go to the Updates page, I have the messages that everything is current:

In other words, there is nothing to update. Very occasionally after an update, there is no 1 next to the word Updates, but then the 1 comes back shortly after. I have no idea what's causing this. Via FTP, I've been to the site and the plugins there correspond 1-to-1 to what's listed on the Plugins page.
This is not a serious problem, just annoying. Any idea what's going on and how to correct it?

Hi there,
That sounds like caching issue to me. Or maybe some other plugin that's triggering it?
OK, I'll deactivate everything and see what happens.
