First time posting to this forum. Have had generatepress for 6 months or so but aside from a few simple blogs haven’t had the chance to really give it a stretch. I currently run a buddypress social network with about 10,000+ active members. It gets a lot of traffic and the theme https://olympus.crumina.net that I use; while gorgeous looking, is super sluggish and has a ton of bloat, not to mention WP Bakery Page Builder which makes me want to poke my eyes out with a hot poker every time i use it.
I’m thinking I can recreate the themes elements using some of the generatpress elements and with elementor.
The theme uses the youzer plugin to style buddypress so I would continue to use that to take care of how buddypress looks, and I have snippets from that developer for all the notification widgets and so on.
What I dont know how to do is get a large header like that and I want to create off canvas siderbars on both sides of the website. I realize I could acheive this with elementor, but generatepress on its own, without elementor seems like a better option, and a faster one at that. Perhaps using the Catalyst Site Template and modifying that with two off canvas side bars?
Your suggetions and any snippets to make this happen would be so appreciated. Not a developer yet. but I am learning as I go.March 6, 2020 at 9:29 am #1187244TomLead DeveloperLead Developer
This is tough one to help with in the forum alone, but I’ll try to point you in the right direction.
For the big page hero at the top, you should be able to use our Elements module: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/header-element-overview/
Then you can add a background video to the Page Hero: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/page-hero-background-video/
GP Premium only has one off-canvas panel, which you can check out here: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/off-canvas-panel-overview/
The panel on the right would likely need a custom solution – maybe a plugin.
If it were me, I would start tacking design elements one by one. If you run into issues as you go through, feel free to ask us questions in here. It’s a lot easier for us to help with specific one-off questions than full site designs.
