Trying to understand how retina images are handled in GP

By default, GP's only option for a retina version is on logos. (Appearance > Customize > Site Identity - Retina logo upload - https://docs.generatepress.com/article/adding-header-logo/)

If you're pertaining to specific parts of the site, it's really up to the users. As for the default images like featured images or post thumbnails, it's WordPress default. (I don't think WordPress supports retina by default, you'll need a plugin to generate retina sizes.)
