How can I try different themes without losing what I have in my current theme? Last time I tried, it was a disaster because a lot from current theme didn’t carry over to new theme.

Why doesn’t all your content carryover when you switch themes?
If we don’t remove the previous site template, the 2 template settings and content will override each other, it will not turn out a good result.
The best way to try a new template, is to start a staging site, most server hosts offer this service for free.
