The categories dropdown does not appear on my posts

The theme doesn't have the ability to remove that.

That wasn't what I was referring to,
however the problem is actually that it just takes a long time for the dropdown of categories to appear.
But it does eventually appear.

I do have another question about comments.
I have 74,000 posts and most are appearing with a section for comments, is there a way to make them disappear on a site wide basis, and have new posts default to no comments?

That shouldn't be a theme-related issue.

I would recommend disabling all plugins to make sure nothing is causing a conflict.
