Switching from http to https

I have recently updated to https and now using a plugin 'really simple redirect' for 'insecure content' problems. However, the plugin has increased the site load time from under 1 second to around 2 seconds. Can I achieve this without using any plugin for having the fastest website.
You can do it a one time search/replace of your URLs with a plugin like this: https://en-ca.wordpress.org/plugins/velvet-blues-update-urls/
I did that but it still says insecure content. I have somehow managed to gain the speed by some optimization and code removal from htaccess
If you can link me to the page where you're getting the insecure content message I should be able to help :)
