some images do not appear in infinite scroll of blog posts

When certain archive blog posts show up on a page created from a category menu, or on the blog page showing all posts, the first few (8) images (featured images) show up in the list, then all the rest show no images, but just the text and the more links, with a big space where the image is supposed to be. Refreshing the page does not make them appear, but when the "more" button is click/pressed it goes to the individual post with the featured image intact. I've read that there is a "default" number of 8 posts determined somewhere by WordPress, but if that is the problem, how do I change that? I've regenerated thumbnails and am stumped about what else to do.
This website has been in effect since 2013 and Generate Press has been used for most of that time. Here's a sample page:

Never mind. I figured out how to change that number. I thought it was overridden by specifying things in the customize feature. I do realize it will take longer for the pages to load, but that is a topic for another day...or lifetime.
