Social Media Icons missing on Top Bar

I just updated my staging server to the latest WordPress plus GeneratePress Pro and I notice that the social media icons on the top bar are now gone. You can see what they look like on my production server which has not been update:

What can be causing this?

The 2 sites don't use the same version for the menu-icons plugin (font awesome). The live site uses 5.5.3 while the staging site uses 5.6.
Plus the live sites adds this in while the staging site doesn't: <link rel="stylesheet" id="font-awesome-shims-css" href="https://use.fontawesome.com/releases/v5.15.2/css/v4-shims.css?wpfas=true" type="text/css" media="all">
We're not exactly sure why and this isn't something the theme controls. It's best to ask the plugin developer for this particular issue.
That is weird as I did not update that plugin. What was updated was GP Premium and Beaver Builder Pro which GeneratePress required that I install to use one of the GeneratePress premium sites that I imported.

Perhaps auto-update for the plugin was enabled? This also isn't something the theme controls. It's a WordPress core feature.
That said, I believe the best way to go forward is to set the menu icons again to match the newly updated icons plugin.
I set up Font Awesome to use 5.5 and "Enable v4 shims compatibility" and the icons are back.
