Slow pageload, many pictures

My website Google Pagespeed score is 33 procent, which is very slow.
Solution: smaller pictures (less Kb).
But when I upload a picture and take a look in my uploads I can see the picture plus the same picture in 5,6 or more sizes. That takes a lot of MB's!! Why is that? Can I disable this? And what will happen then? I also have different websites with different themes and an uploaded picture appears only one time.
Anyone?

GP doesn't create image sizes unless you create them in "Customize > Blog > Post Images" and click the "Set image sizes" button.

WordPress creates multiple images when you upload based on the settings you choose in "Settings > Media".

That being said, the pagespeed score doesn't see all of the images created, it just sees the one used on the page itself.

A plugin like WP Smush is good, or running your images (that will show up on the site) through something like this helps as well: http://optimizilla.com/
