Slideout menu to slideout sidebar/widget area?

Hi Tom - I love the new slideout menu, hooray!
Can you think of a way I could customize this to be a slideout widget area? I've already implemented this on another site not using GP at all, so I know how to do it in general, though I'd love for it to use as much of GP's structure as possible. So for instance, is there a way that I could use the GP slideout menu, and replace the menu with a widget area using functions.php?

Apart from the inside_slideout_navigation hook, there is also the after_slideout_navigation hook.
