I also see that they will charge a fee. A general question for me would be if all payment gateways charge fees or is there any way to set this up manually to avoid percentage based fees on a webshop? Or is that just common practice?

You need a payment gateway to connect your payment services, they come in all shapes and sizes from Paypal payments to full blown connectivity using Stripe or other portals. And those will come with some kind of commission structure.

Thanks, I had a look at PayPal as that might be an interesting option. However, the "WooCommerce PayPal Payments" plugin seriously seems to have some issues looking at the Wordpress.org comments. It appears to be a free plugin hooking up to a PayPal Account which would also accept Credit cards. I would be happy with those two options for my scenario, but am hesitant to use this plugin due to the ratings. Do you know of any alternatives, it does not have to be WooCommerce as this just seems to be the biggest plugin out there. Anything for small scale businesses would work as well and just very basic options.

I don't think there're many alternatives for Woocommerce in WP.
I only know Ecwid and BigCommerce, but never tried them personally.

I have a Woocommerce shop and use Woocommerce paypal plugin, haven't found anything wrong with it.

Thanks, I might check it out as a test - perhaps all the bad reviews came in at a time where the plugin did not work 100% yet and its fixed since then? This option does not seem to take any %fees as far is I can see. If anyone else has any other recommendations, feel free to post in here. I will mark it as solved already. Thanks!

Just to check: This system would also use a gateway taking provisions from any donations coming in? Do you know which tools/plugins have been used to set it up?

I will have a closer look later, in a quick scanthrough I see that they say you only need a PayPal account and that would enable my clients to pay with PayPal or Credit cards (via PayPal gateway) and then I would not have to pay any commission to any third party if I see that correctly? Just to PayPal I guess. Or do I need any pro plugins for that to setup?

Thats something you would need to check with PayPal.

EDD provides free ( inc. PayPal ) and paid for payment gateway extensions. Whether you need Pro versions for your shop isn't really something we can answer. Might be best to speak with plugin author regarding your requirements.
