Sidebar affecting my single post width

Here's a gif of the issue.
Basically my sidebar which is set to 400px is affecting the size of my blog post width, which I have set to 800px. How do I prevent my blog width from changing when I add the sidebar. I have all of this available space on the screen.

That's the default behavior. The content adjusts to the width of the sidebars. How would you like your Single Post pages to look? Do you have a sample site for reference?

I want my posts to pretty much look exactly like the posts on this site.
The example site you've linked is using 1200px in the container width setting:
