Show number of words rather than full excerpt in archives

Hello,

Sometimes my posts have an actual excerpt that I have typed in, sometimes not. This looks odd in the archive because some posts have a read more button showing and some don't. Is it possible to force all posts to show a number of words plus a read more whether an excerpt exists or not?
