WordPress excerpts strip all HTML (including images).

However, you could set a manual excerpt using the more tag which will include HTML: https://generatepress.com/knowledgebase/using-the-more-tag/

Thanks for your reply.

Ik now it must be possible to do, because the website i want to restyle with GP is built with a theme that doesn’t use features images. The image which is placed in the post is shown in the excerpt. Even not above but left or right aligned. (sliedrecht24.nl)

Maybe an idea to place it in the suggestions for GP ?

They might be using a custom excerpt function, which isn’t a good idea (and not allowed in themes on WordPress.org).
