Separate containers - one container

What is the significance/ difference between separate containers and one container?
Separate Containers separates each of the main content containers, like the widgets, content area etc..
One container is more of a boxed layout - everything inside one box.
You should be able to see the difference by playing with the options, especially if you set a background that stands out :)
