HI,
Just wondering is there a way to add and edit meta tags to posts and pages without the need of having an seo plugin? If not, is there such light weight plugin that can be used? I am using all in one seo pugin at the moment for sites but I find that it seems to be very heavy and unecessarily so. I would appreciate any recommendations on this.

Yoast SEO and Rank math SEO are 2 popular SEO plugins.
I use Yoast SEO on my site.
SEO plugin should not affect your site speed a lot.

SEO plugin generates a series meta data and insert them in to headarea of your site. If you are comfortable with editing HTML,you can use ahook element to add meta data to the wp_head area:
