Two options to consider:

- You can change the navigation search color in Customizer > Colors > Primary Navigation.

- Add a placeholder text with this PHP snippet:

Hi Leo,

The placeholder snippet works, although it doesn't give me a conventional search box it shows an indicator that text can be entered. Could I add a box if one is required (I tried the colour change but it spoils the simplicity)?

it has a separate site search widget (i.e. not in the header), but perhaps what I've now got on the staging site is fine . . . If it isn't easy/obvious then I'm OK with it as it is!
