Search placeholder not appearing

We are using a GeneratePress-based child theme and I have added the GeneratePress search form to our primary navigation menu, but the "Search" placeholder text never appears in either the browser view or the HTML. I added the generate_search_placeholder filter to our functions.php file, but that didn't make any difference. Tried with and without the GP searchform.php in the child theme. I'm sure whatever is wrong is something obvious and dumb, but I would appreciate help finding it. TIA.
