Remove Sidebar

Hi!
In this topic I learned how to use a media query in order to hide the sidebar on screen which are smaller than a certain monitor size. BUT using this method, even if the sidebar is not visible, the left space of the page is occupied by the sidebar anyway.
Is possible to hide the sidebar and, at the same time, be sure that the page occupy the whole page as if the sidebar were not there?
