Read more functionality

Is there a way I can have the read more function the way it did before perhaps by adding something to the functions.php? I use it for the purpose of email subscriptions so it will show just a portion of the post. But I like to have the excerpt show on the blog.
For sure, but if you aren't using the "More tag" and have the post format set to standard, it should show the excerpt regardless.
