Pull Latest Post To Display In Grid On Homepage

Hi Tom,
A bit beyond the scope of the theme I guess, but is there a simple way to an excerpt and featured image of the latest blog post and display this in a 33% grid on the homepage?
I'm using the light responsive grid and would like to display a section with the following -
Image | Latest post excerpt | Image

You might want to check out this plugin: https://en-ca.wordpress.org/plugins/display-posts-shortcode/
It will allow you to display the latest post with a shortcode which you can add inside the grid.
