Problem with excerpts

I can't get excerpts to display on my blog archive pages unless I manually add an excerpt in the post edit screen. Even then I'm not able to adjust the length and there's no "read more" link.

Hi, it was a problem with a shortcodes plugin I was using. Everything is back to normal now.
