I finally got it to work by deactivating all my other plugins, then the update notification showed up straight away.

Now I have to work out which plugin caused the issue, or I won't get any further updates.

I've worked out it is a plugin called "Advanced Database Cleaner | Version 2.0.0 | By Younes JFR."

With that plugin activated the GP update doesn't show.

[solved] Hi Tom, I've whittled down the problem and beta updates are now working fine. It was my own fault, for some reason I copied code incorrectly and it had changed characters when I pasted (single quotes ' went double “ etc.) I should have scrutinized it more carefully.

Simon - it's possible that plugin is using an old version of the same updater, which can cause conflicts in some cases.
