posting onto social media

hello,
I've run into a problem in the past few months when posting on Social Media.
in the past few months, whenever I post onto facebook, the primary image that populates my post is the text of my website, rather than an image from the post. this is something that changed from before--could you please explain why that happens and how to change it?

The theme itself doesn't control that.
You can try a plugin like YoastSEO.
but it was working ok up until a few months ago. if it doesn't have to do w/ the theme, then how would a plug-in help?
YoastSEO allows you to choose an image when a link is shared on social media.
You can also see exactly where Facebook is looking (or not looking) on your pages with their debugger:
