I just created a new wordpress site yesterday, and I installed the gp plugins today. When I attempt to update, they all fail to remove the old plugins, and the plugins end up getting deleted, and I have to remove the old directories to reinstall.

I should add that this wordpress installation was done with an installer. All my previous wordpress sites I have installed by hand.

    Hi Roy,

This type of thing usually happens when your WordPress installation doesn’t have full permission to delete/add files to your server.

Give your hosting a call and make sure WordPress has all of the permissions it needs.

    Let me know πŸ™‚

I called my hosting provider, and they recommended I reinstall wp by hand, instead of by using the installer, which I have done. I just tried again and I am having the same issue. The plugin version I am starting with is typography 0.9. Would having newer plugin versions fix the update issue?

I should add that I’m not having issues updating other plugins, just the generatepress plugins. The error I’m seeing is the old plugin cannot be removed. When I check the file structure, it looks like the files are gone, but the directory generate-typography still exists, and an empty inc folder remains inside.

    Hi there,

I don’t think this is a GP error – I still think it has to do with the permissions on your server.

Who are you hosted with? They should just be able to check permissions and fix it right away.

Here’s some other people having the same issue:

    https://yoast.com/fix-automatic-plugin-update/
    http://www.elehost.com/faq/web-tool-tips-and-fixes/52-wordpress/165-fix-for-wordpress-could-not-remove-the-old-plugin-error

I don’t usually recommend changing file permissions on your server yourself – this can lead to hacker vulnerability.

I’m surprised your host wasn’t able find a solution.

One thing you can try, in case it is a GP issue, is use this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/easy-theme-and-plugin-upgrades/

Then download the new .zip, and upload it manually, checking the option to overwrite it provided by the above plugin.

Let me know if that fixes it or not πŸ™‚

I understand that this might not be a generatepress problem. Since the site I am working on is a commercial site, I could not wait for the solution to be fixed through here, and other plugins have updated correctly, I had to make the decision to purchase another theme, and won’t be using GP for this site. I still use GP for my other web sites, but this could have easily been fixed by sending me new download links for more up to date plugins.

    Hi Roy,

Very sorry I wasn’t quick enough!

I wasn’t aware that you couldn’t download the newest version, but did you not still have the version you originally downloaded you could reinstall?

I can create an account for you to avoid this in the future if you’d like?

I have the original versions of the plugins that I downloaded when I first purchased the addons, but the download keys have expired. How do I download newer versions?

    Hi Roy,

Go to your account here: https://generatepress.com/account/

Click “View details and downloads” under your purchase.

At the bottom of page that, you can save the .zip files for the add-ons.

Ok, I have determined that the plugin update failure is definitely a problem with my hosting provider, although none of the links provided have helped. We can resolve this, as it really isn’t a problem with GP at all. One last question I have is, once I am happy with the appearance of my site, will disabling the plugins leave the settings they have affected intact? IE, can I disable the typography plugin once I have found my fonts, and spacing plugin once I am happy with the spacing?

    Hi Roy,

You’ll need to keep the plugins activated in order for your settings to have an effect on the theme.

Let me know if you have any other questions πŸ™‚
