Page Layout not working for default blog page

My default blog page (listing all blog posts) for some reason forces me to have a sidebar (I mean a widget showing the archive, I'd like that removed)
I'd rather remove it, I tried doing it via the actual page settings, see below.
No joy though, any other workaround here?

Metabox values are ignored by default on index pages - it's a WordPress thing.
