Page content over page header

Hi,

I'm working on a site where I have a page header with a video background on the homepage, and I've made some buttons which I want to be slightly over the header.

I've tried doing that by placing the buttons in the page and then adding a negative top margin, which does move them up, but also shrinks the page header by that amount. I haven't been able to find a similar topic here, so I'm posting here in hopes of finding a solution.
