Overlaying Image with Negative Margin

I'm trying to achieve the effect of having the image in the container on the right dip down below the border of the larger container that holds the grid itself. However, nothing I have tried seems to accomplish this.
I've tried changing the the inner z-index of the entire container, just the image container... nothing. I'm stumped.
You can see an image attached of what I'm trying to accomplish.
