Evan
I upgraded a WordPress site from maparaan theme to GP and the text on many of the pages had line breaks “<br>” inserted where there should not be any. In addition to that, sometimes the HTML showing the breaks would show up in the text view of the classic editor and sometimes no HTML was visible. I could always see that he breaks existed when inspecting the HTML through a web browser.
I was able to fix most of it by copying the text to a notepad text editor(when HTML tags showed up) and stripping out the line breaks and re-pasting into the classic editor but that is what I am trying to avoid in the future. Also, I need to stay with the classic editor for this site rather than blocks.
Any suggestions on what to look for or how to fix this? My partner has seen this as well on a different site with separate computer using a different browser.November 11, 2020 at 8:42 am #1527084Leo

This is a good example:

there are hard returns here. These exisited on the page with the previous theme, but didn’t mess up the text. They do show in GeneratePress. Any ideas for me?

StaffCustomer SupportAre you referring to this?
https://www.screencast.com/t/330wQy1XYQThe editor is handled by WordPress and the theme itself shouldn’t be the issue.
Is your previous theme using the WordPress default editor?
Let me know 🙂

Yes, that that screenshot is the problem.
As far as I can see, the old theme was very generic and used the regular WordPress editor. If I look at the page on archive.org, it doesn’t show the hard breaks.
This isn’t a big deal, mostly just a curiosity. I can clean these up manually pretty easily.

StaffCustomer SupportThe theme itself really doesn’t have the ability to do this to your content – haven’t had other reports on this either.
Out of curiosity, is the issue fixed if you activate your previous theme again?

We have already deleted the old theme. So, I cannot go back.
I think we have resolved the issue. Looking at the archive.org version of the problem page, I used the browser inspector to change the body font size. Changing from 14 to 16px, made the hard returns show up. I think the old theme was not responsive and the hard breaks were placed at just the right width to hide them on the fixed width page.
So, mystery solved.
Thank you for helping me work through this.
