new page showing up in menu

How do I prevent a new page from showing up in the menu of the website - when I go to appearance/menu I see the page listed as a check box option but I don't see it in the model or display section to the right. When I go into customize, same thing, the new page is listed in the menu on the website but in the control panel of the menu where you can add/delete menu options it's not there.
I figured it out. I created a new menu as my main menu, I did not set the primary location as that menu under the Menu Location in the manage with live view section.
