Mobile Menu Time to Interactive

Hi GP team,

I just have a question about the mobile menu on my site: https://www.academicenglishco.com/

I've noticed that, on mobile, and on more complex pages in particular (e.g. https://www.academicenglishco.com/ielts-reading-diagram-label-completion/), it can take quite a few seconds for the mobile menu to become interactive. Once you can click on it, the overlay appears but takes a bit longer for the menu items themselves to appear.

I don't have any caching plugins installed - just Kinsta's default caching as well as Cloudflare. I think this may be a side effect of something Cloudflare is doing, but I'm not sure. It's far less noticeable with Cloudflare disabled.

As far as I can see, this only affects the first user, and once the page is cached, this is a non-issue, but I'm curious to know whether there's anything in the GP menu or other GP settings that I can change to minimise the issue. Or is this related to Cloudflare and its settings?

Many thanks in advance,
Tim

Hi again,

Actually, I think this might affect every user on first visit. Clearing my browser cache leads to the issue again on first visit.

I have the impression that something about the mobile menu (the fact that it's off-canvas?) is one of the last things to load on the page, or that Cloudflare is leading to that outcome?

Thanks!
Tim

Hi there,

I highly suggest checking the page performance reports of your site/page.

Example:
https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.academicenglishco.com%2Fielts-reading-diagram-label-completion%2F

Have you tried improving the page load speed by using optimization plugins?

Minifying and aggregating your CSS and JS may do the trick. But you may have to place around a bit more with JS exclusions as some scripts may break.

As for Cloudflare, this pretty tricky to deal with as Cloudflare's server quality is involved. There may be days where they have technical issues so it's hard to pinpoint this properly.

The best you could do for this, for now, is to at least be sure that the site is loading fast without Cloudflare.

Thanks, Alvin.

Yes, I've played around with optimization plugins, etc., but my question was really about the GP mobile menu, and whether it has any specific settings, etc. that could make it load faster on the page and become interactive sooner, etc. The page itself loads fast enough, but something seems to be stopping the menu from loading quickly.

No worries if not. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something obvious in the GP menu settings.

Thanks,
Tim

None within the customizer UI as it's pretty basic. It's mainly for styling. You can try setting the menu to its most basic form but I don't think that'll make any significant difference.

This issue is mostly about how soon the scripts involved loads. :)

Hi Alvin,

Thanks for your reply.

I've managed to halve the time it takes for the menu to become clickable by turning off the off-canvas mode. Cloudflare is obviously doing something funny. I'll play around with the settings.

Thanks!
Tim

No problem. Let us know how it goes. :D

Hi again, Elvin,

I switched off Cloudflare to remove that as a variable, but it seems the issue exists regardless.

At the moment, all that's running is Kinsta's server-side caching - I don't think I can turn that off. I have their CDN turned off. I was previously with another host without server-side caching, though, and I'd observed this behaviour with them, too, so I don't think it has anything to do with Kinsta's caching.

Is there any way to force the menu-related js, etc. (sorry - I'm not very technical) so that it loads first?

Many thanks,
Tim

Hi Alvin,

I'm happy to report that I've found the issue.

It seems a GDPR plugin (Cookiebot) on my site has been causing the issue. Disabling it fixed it completely.

Thanks for your patience and great support!

Tim

Glad you found the issue - thanks for reporting back :)

Its script must've been causing the site to load slow.

Glad you got it sorted. No problem. Thank you for sharing it with us. :D
