Can you ask them to add these lines to your wp-config.php file with the staging URL?: https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL#Edit_wp-config.php

Once they/you do that, we'll be able to see the staging site properly and even log in to investigate further.

Sorry, but BH made it clear that they don't troubleshoot theme makers. Also, while they followed what you asked, I cut/pasted as I didn't trust myself, they weren't clear on what you were going to do.

right now, I'm locked out of my site. I can't access wp-admin.

codex is an example of "you just have to know what we don't tell you." In this case, does the change go into the 'staging' or 'original' server.

this is what I did:
in public_html/gp I added this to wp-config.php

define('WP_HOME','http://www.syzygy.org');
define('WP_SITEURL','http://www.syzygy.org');
/* end generate press debugging */

I can't have my site down at the end of the month, big time, some months.I've restored main http://syzygy.org from off-line autoback-up drive.

No need to take your live site down at all - it can remain exactly as it is.

This code should go in your wp-config.php file in the staging server:

define('WP_HOME','http://gp.syzygy.org/');
define('WP_SITEURL','http://gp.syzygy.org/');

Once that's done, if you can send me login details to the staging server, I can dig deeper: https://generatepress.com/contact/
