Lost all GP settings after moving site

I'm curious about what went wrong and how to avoid something like this happening again.
I had to remove and reinstall a site after downgrading the hosting. So I did what I always do, downloaded the complete site through ftp and downloaded the database using phpmyadmin. After reinstallation all the changes I made during the days before were lost and I had to start all over. I know I could have exported the GP settings, but I thought that was not necessary because I was moving the complete site, files and database. I don't understand what could have gone wrong.

Not sure what went wrong. Manually cloning a WordPress site should be viable.
Perhaps something wrong happened with exportation/importation of the DB? Could it be a corrupted .sql file?

Moreover, when it comes to migration, we often defer our customers to a plugin like Duplicator: https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/

Must have been a corrupted database then, because step 4 was not necessary, since the domain did not change. The hosting had to be removed/disconnected from the domainname, and after connecting a new hosting package I had to copy everything back.
