Listing my categories on a static page

Are you wanting to list your actual category names, or posts within each category?

If you choose not to use a plugin, you would need to custom code something.

Both actually. But my question was about the category names + (number of posts), which I have via a widget in the right sidebar.

Without a plugin, you might have to manually input that data into the content area.
