Left sidebar nav current menu item

I have my primary menu in the left sidebar, and all is working well. However, when I go to one of the sub-menu pages, I would like the dropdown to remain open, with the current page highlighted. The current page color is working, just can't see it because the menu has collapsed.
Has anyone worked out how to keep the menu open on a page that is linked to a submenu item?
