It broke after updating the theme to the latest version

Where is the code block you are talking about? I did not put such a code. it was previously put for ad placement but this didn't break the homepage.

the problem has been fixed. I can't believe it's from ad codes.

Check the advert codes and make sure the is no missing closing </div> in its HTML. As that would be the likely cause.
