You can use the WP Show Posts plugin to display a separate Grid of Posts:

To add it above the Main blog posts, you can add the shortcode it provides to a Header Element, set to the Front Page:

It does provide a carousel option but that is only available on the Pro version.
As the content is loaded above the fold, i would recommend keeping the number of posts to a minimum. Also note - you should not use Pagination or Load More on that Post list as it may conflict with your blogs navigation.

Yes, just follow those instructions, the Front Page display rule location is your home page whether it is a Static Page or the displaying the Latest Posts.
